CALVARY'S BEGINNINGS
Calvary Baptist Church of Norristown began in 1885 as a Mission Sunday School of First Baptist Church, which was located at DeKalb Pike and Airy Street. The Sunday School met in a stable on Haws Avenue near Marshall Street.
Two years later the Sunday School organized to become Second Baptist Church of Norristown, changing its name to Calvary Baptist Church in1902, on the day that the cornerstone (made of stone cut from Mount Calvary in Palestine) of the present sanctuary was laid. The Education Building was added in the 1930s to accommodate the large Sunday school at that time, and today houses the Calvary Baptist Children’s Learning Center, Monday through Friday
.
In 2008, the congregation called its first Hispanic pastor, and the church continues today as bilingual, with English and Spanish.
